A lot of people are very vulnerable when going through a divorce and are not in a good position to get the hard sell.”

Stallholders had paid upwards of £400 for a pitch. Scott Collier, 42, a wedding photographer who has now branched out into the divorce industry, said the day had paid for itself. “At first I couldn’t imagine why anyone would wish to have their photograph taken after a divorce,” he said. “But people want a new image.”

The visitors, who were mainly women, were sometimes bewildered by the vast range of products on offer.

Danielle, 42, from Hertfordshire, stood at the exit. “It was informative but quite confusing,” she said. She recently agreed with her husband that they would separate. “I’m a first-timer,” she said. “A lot of the people I met today were on their second or third divorce . . . but I think this has been great for beginners.”

Another lady, 43, from Southend, spent half an hour in the fair before marching out again. “I want my money back,” she said. “They can’t tell you how to deal with a maniac of a husband who just leaves the country.”
