I’m the one in the family she relates to best. Chris is only interested in whether she has left droppings around the house. But she doesn’t poo indoors. She’s house-trained. Chris is the one who leaves a trail of mess behind him.

She’s a gentle rabbit, but she has this weird little thing: it’s a procedure we have to go through before she’ll let me handle her. When I go to get her from her hutch, she thumps her foot, goes into her little nesting area, then just sits there, waiting to be picked up. That’s her little moment — her playtime.

Her companion is a guinea pig called Sherman. The interaction between them is adorable. Sherman used to try to hump her — I thought, “Oh, God, I’ve got a gay guinea pig” — but since PP was spayed, that’s come to an end. I feel rather sorry for Sherman. I think he occasionally has a go at a log.

The thing about rabbits, unlike cats and dogs, is that you have to invest a lot of time and energy in them before they start to love you and respond to you. But that’s what makes them more interesting. And their ears are just so sweet. I hold PP’s up to my nostrils. There’s nothing quite so soft as rabbit ears on the end of your nose.
