THE MULBERRY ROXANNE
Pushing chart-topper Marc Jacobs off last season’s number 2 slot, is the Mulberry Roxanne bag — formerly known as Roxy, until they got sued. Chunky and big on pockets and buckles, it has been described in American Vogue as the London girl’s “anti-Birkin” alternative. The bag officially became hot when Scarlett Johansson was photographed with it on the set of the new Woody Allen movie, but it has been the must-have for models, make-up artists and designers since its launch earlier this year.

THE CHLOE BRACELET
Entering its sixth season as the chic dress-up bag of choice (only the Fendi baguette, back in the 1990s, had as much staying power), the Chloé bracelet looks set to stay, especially now that Sienna Miller, the new style-setter, has fallen in love with it.

THE CHLOE CAMERA
A new chart entry for Chloé: the chain-handled camera bag. Ultra-chunky chains and leather luggage tags have become the Chloé signature, and this is the bag that carries them best.

THE MARC JACOBS BLAKE
In at number 5 is the Blake, one of the latest from Marc Jacobs. His bags, with their pouch pockets, chunky silver hardware and lickable colours (right now, the most wanted are eau de nil, mint green and aubergine), are a guaranteed hit every season. Watch out for pirate versions on the high street.

THE MARNI MOCK-CROC
Knocking the Luella Gisele bag off the number 6 slot is the Marni mock-croc bag with charms. There is something irresistible about this slouchy, roomy, vintage-look bag — and the taffeta and velvet corsages, sold individually, give it that customised feel that’s right for now.

THE PRADA CROCODILE
At number 7, the Prada multi-tone bag looks like one your chic granny might have owned: neat, boxy, ladylike and expensive — and crocodile is huge for autumn. It’s something of a cover version, so you’ll probably be able to pick up an original granny bag in your local thrift shop.

THE LOUIS VUITTON GRACIE
A surprise new entry at number 8 is the Louis Vuitton Gracie in velvet monogram. A cross between a mini treasure chest and a medieval reliquary, it takes the craze for straps, buckles, chains and adornment to new levels.

THE CHANEL QUILT
Always somewhere in the top 10, Chanel is sticking fast at number 9 with a new version of the classic quilt bag. Somehow, we never tire of it.

THE DIOR GAMBLER
A new entry at 10 is the Dior Gambler, complete with dice charms. Too much for some, but it’s beaten subtler statements (Celine’s leopard-print bag) into the line-up.
