Q I have recently changed jobs, and am suffering from higher levels of
anxiety than before. I think I am subconsciously concerned about my
performance and acceptance. This has resulted in poor sleep and
palpitations, as well as generally feeling on edge. I am currently receiving
hypnosis. Can you recommend something herbal that might help?
Rachel S, Devon
A Herbs Hands Healing’s Chamomile & Vervain (£7 for
50ml; 0845 345 3727, www.herbshandshealing.co.uk) is a wonderful formula
designed by the renowned herbalist and natural healer Jill Davies. The range
uses medicinal plants, most grown locally, that are organic, biodynamic and
collected from sustainable wild sources. Davies believes that creating
“field to pharmacy” products of the highest possible quality ensures
first-class preventative care and holistic healing.
The 14 herbs used in this are all “nervines”, a term used in herbal medicine
to indicate that they tone and strengthen the nerves by feeding, regulating
and strengthening nerve cells. The herbs work together, rather like
different musical instruments in an orchestra, and the overall aim is
simultaneously to stimulate and sedate the system, in order to deal with any
overexertion or underexertion of the nerves.
Davies suggests taking 5ml of the formula in 25ml of water or fruit juice up
to five times daily for one week. For longer-term restoration, continue
using it for up to three months. Do not use this product if you are on
prescription medication.
Q I have been receiving treatment for back pain and have tried various
therapies, including physiotherapy and osteopathy. These have helped, but
have not totally cleared up the problem. Can you suggest anything else?
Matthew Hayden, Reading
A There are many complementary therapies that can help with
back pain, including cranial work, acupuncture, McTimoney chiropractic,
Bowen technique and reflexology. These explore the relationship between back
pain and other areas of the body, For example, since I began suffering with
back pain, after having a baby, the spinal reflex areas on my feet have been
agony to work on. Prior to this, however, I could press the areas firmly,
with no real response or pain. Call the Association of Reflexologists (0870
567 3320) to find a qualified practitioner.
Bowen technique is a gentle treatment that involves a therapist using thumbs
and fingers to make rolling movements over muscles and tendons at precise
points. The process releases energy, sending impulses to the brain that
trigger the body’s healing systems. While it can help with a range of
conditions, it is particularly appropriate for back pain. To find a
practitioner in your area, contact the Bowen Technique Therapist Register
(07986 008384, www.bowentechnique.com).
Q I am 59, keep reasonably fit and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables.
I do not drink tea or coffee, because they contain caffeine. However, I have
been reading about the benefits of drinking green tea and would like to know
more about it. Also, I am not sure what the caffeine content of green tea
is. Would drinking a decaffeinated version mean that I would lose some of
the health benefits? Brian Naylor, Sunderland
A The benefits of drinking green tea are attributed to the
powerful antioxidants, known as catechin polyphenols, found in green tea
leaves. Much of the research that has been conducted concerns
epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the most abundant and potent catechin
contained in the leaves.
EGCG appears to have excellent anticarcinogenic properties. It also helps to
restrict the build-up of blood cholesterol, lower blood-sugar levels, reduce
high blood pressure and suppress the ageing process, and is said to help
control the ratio of body fat to muscle by promoting thermogenesis (where
heat is created in the body to burn fuels such as fat, thereby increasing
the body’s metabolic rate).
A cup of green tea (camellia sinensis) contains approximately 30mg
caffeine, compared with 40mg in black tea or 120mg in brewed coffee. The
type of decaffeination process used may affect the health benefits. Try
Clipper Decaffeinated Green Tea (£1.49, from supermarkets and health
stores), which has its caffeine gently removed by a harmless process
involving spring water and effervescence.
