Photography is a medium that transcends barriers of language, culture or geography, enabling people around the globe to share the issues that matter to them. Last year, young people in 85 countries participated in Shoot Nations, contributing work that expressed their views of the world around them and their hopes and fears for the future.
Plan Shoot Nations in association with Times Online is now inviting entries for 2008 on the theme of climate change. If you are aged between 11 and 24, we are offering the chance to win photographic equipment and see your work displayed in London, Berlin, Senegal and at the World Youth Congress in Quebec.
Winners will be selected for two age groups - 11 to 16 and 17 to 24 - in the following three categories:
1. How is climate change affecting your life?
2. Act now - be the change!
3. Your world in the future
The winners will be chosen by an expert panel including Times photographer Nick Ray and Janice McLaren of the Photographers' Gallery, who will also bestow an award for the best overall photograph.
From the beginning of August, members of the public will have the opportunity to vote for the Times Readers' Winner from a shortlist selected by the panel and displayed on Times Online.
All winners will receive an Olympus E420 digital SLR and an invitation to the August 12 launch of an exhibition in London's Oxo Tower, where their work will be displayed. As well as the London exhibition, which will run from August 13 to 17, the winning photos and other highly commended entries will be shown in Berlin, Dakar in Senegal and at the World Youth Congress in Quebec. They will also be published on Times Online.
Additionally, the Times Readers' Winner will travel to the World Youth Congress to present their photograph and a lightbox installation of the best 150 entries.
Peter Gilberi, 17, from Ghana, who won last year in the 11-16 category, said: "When I learnt I had won a category, I was amazed and wondered how someone like me from a remote village could win such an award. However, I now believe in the saying that ‘You can achieve big things by doing little things’. My being part of Shoot Nations has changed my perception about myself."
