Metal Gear Solid, one of the great sagas in gaming history, draws to a close with this, the fourth instalment. Once again, you play Solid Snake, the hard-as-nails soldier-spy, who is now somewhat haggard.
The game is set in a Middle Eastern warzone of the future, crawling with guerrillas and mercenaries hired by giant corporations. Your mission is a suitably bombastic piece of nonsense and you enter the fray kitted out with a high-tech camouflage suit, a friendly droid and the finely honed combat skills of a grizzled veteran.
Metal Gear’s mixture of stealth and explosive action is more potent than ever, and at its best it is thrilling and a good showcase for the PS3, which remains short of big-hitting exclusives. The problem is that at times it barely feels interactive at all. Ten minutes of sneaking through rugged mountain country can be surrounded by 20 more of watching waffly footage. The plot is also so convoluted that even fans will be bewildered. MGS4 is a fine finale for such a popular series but will leave many twiddling their thumbs.

I think many will agree that it is a waste that the saga is coming to an end. I am glad that it is currently being translated into a film, due to be released in 2009 (based on the original Metal Gear Solid on Playstation One). People need to understand just how epic and moving this story is.
Pat Goddard, Sussex,
Those that dont understand the story either arent trying hard enough or arent established fans. My advice; play the whole series and cap it off with this masterpiece. Yes the videos are long, the story is complex, but if you make the effort and have an open mind it will blow you away.
Jon, Durham,
The story line is absolutely great. I personally love the game footage, its engaging, adds meaning and makes it alot more than just another shooting game on the already flooded market. its more than this its masterpiece of a game.
Sunjeev , Brisbane,
The game hits you over the head with it's talk of "proxy battles" and ""war economies". We get it. Alas this outing is more like watching a movie where the gameplay functions as little more than an interactive dvd menu.

As if we dont see enough middle east, and this game has a fantastic plot and will not leave you confused as long as you have a brain.
Ray, waterford, ireland
It's a shame that the game isn't set in a Middle Eastern warzone... That's only one of five acts (which range from the a Jungle setting to a barren winter setting).
