Stephen Gough, a former Marine who has been dubbed the Naked Rambler for his insistence on his right to walk naked across Britain, enjoyed six steps of freedom yesterday. Gough was freed after 20 months in prison by a sheriff who gave him the chance to end his “vicious circle” of release and rearrest, but was given warning that he would be rearrested if he failed to cover up when let out of the back door of Edinburgh Sheriff Court. Gough emerged into the rain wearing only a rucksack and an untidy beard. After he had taken only six steps in the nude, police took Gough into the back of a van and rearrested him. He will appear in court on Monday.

What people tend to forget is that a decent society should protect children from sex and sexuality. Parents who treasure the innocence of their children do not want to be exposed to people like Mr Gough. This country is full of adults who do not consider the needs of children - as long as their interests and needs are fulfilled then 'stuff everybody else'. Unfortunately England is no longer a decent society.
Chris Reilly, West Midlands,
Has this man actually harmed anyone ?
No.
So why has he been kept in prison ?
People who are offended by the human body really ought to grow up. If they are offended because of their religion, they should accept that if God wanted people to wear clothes all the time, we would have been born with them.
If people started to walk round naked, I am sure people would get used to it, and then never give it a second thought
I prefer to keep my clothes on, because its too cold in this country.
As for my children and nudity, we don't particularly encourage nudity in our house, but if we see each other we don't make a big deal out of it.
Perhaps if Kathryn wants people to wear clothes all the time, she wouldn't mind paying for them ?
Perhaps the state should pay for them ?
Shaun Jackson, Sheffield,
Do children see their parents naked, Peter? I never saw my parents naked and my kids have never see me naked.
This guy is a public nuisance. He is exposing himself to all and sundry and I'm delighted that the Scots courts and police are taking a tough line with him. If he keeps flashing off his privates and defying the courts, let him rot in prison.
Kathryn, Chesterfield, UK
Did the police lock people up before they had clothes, no. If you have not seen the human naked body then there is something wrong with you. children see their parents naked.
You cannot make a person wear clothes but it can be cold without them.
Peter, Hastings, UK
How can police be so effective in keeping one man in prison, for nudity, when they dont seem to be able to do anything to combat the problems which most people are confronted with. I would prefer to find a nude man in the street than a drunken youth who's only interest was to kick my head in.
Dave, morecambe,
Leave him be! What real harm is he causing?
Arnold Ward, Weybridge, Surrey, UK
This guy has a real hang-up.
I wonder what drives him to do this?
