Demonstrators revealed yesterday that they had used Google Earth to plot their protest on the roof of the Houses of Parliament last week against the expansion of Heathrow.
The website, which allows users to zoom in on satellite photographs of Earth, “showed us all the walkways, steps and other details we needed to make our way across the roof from the door to the far side where the public could see us”, said Leo Murray, one of the five protesters.
The planning for the stunt began last autumn after the government published documents for a public consultation on a possible third runway at Heathrow.“What really enraged us was the government saying it supported the idea [of a third runway] even before the consultation began,” said Murray, 31, a postgraduate student in animation. “The consultation was also rigged to exclude almost any mention of climate change.”
Tamsin Omond, a 23-year-old with a first-class degree in English literature from Cambridge, described how they were able to map out the interior of the Palace of Westminster without raising suspicions. “We sent in a reconnaissance group who simply wandered around till they found the route to the roof ending in an open door. The fag butts around it showed it was being used by smokers,” she said. They managed to recruit a young Commons insider who, thanks to having a security pass, was able to carry the banners, handcuffs (bought from a Soho sex shop) and other equipment past the body scanners and X-ray machines that are supposed to protect the buildings.
In all about 15 activists were involved. Though some now face court action, they are determined to continue their campaign.
There are suggestions they may try to disrupt the opening of Heathrow’s terminal five later this month and that a large protest is being planned for Hyde Park this summer. “What the Commons saw this week is just the start,” said Omond.

This time we are being lectured on "Global Warming" by a "student in animation" and a girl who's very good at English literature. Still makes a change from polititicans and news readers.
sedgwick, London, UK
I suppose those of you who don't think pollution or global climate change are issues to be considered also don't think the noise or the fact that the routes in and out of the airport are over densely populated areas are issues either?
heathrow is a total mess. that alone is a good reason for building a new airport. sorry, that won't please the climate change lobby, but there you go. maybe we could tax the airlines properly.

What a bunch of kooks. Global warming is a sham and everyone knows it.

This is a wonderful example of lousy parenting.
Those protesters should be whipped in public, which their parents should have done long ago.

The Leftists in British government and the press are constantly pushing for higher taxes and more regulation while simultaneously attempting to stop economic progress. Saying Manmade Global warming is an undisputable fact from people who cannot tell me if it will rain 3 days from now is inconprehensible to someone with common sense. If has been warmer now than in the last 500 years, the FIRST thing a scientist should ask himself is "what made it warmer here 500 years ago?" That one question destroys any argument for manmade global warming. This is a Leftist Socialist scheme to raise taxes, increase regulation, and stop human progress. British media are the willing stooges for this scam. Today's journalists are brain-washed automatons of Leftist University
"scholars". Any journalist 's desire for the truth has been replaced with the desire to push an agenda. Look how the Times lists 4 organizations aimed to stop further economic development of the airport. Total BIAS!

"News reporting works slightly differently in the UK than the US. In the UK our media does a relatively good job of reporting news rather than censorship like you receive in the US. Thats why the Times has so many US readers." HAHAHAHAHAHAAAA! I love British humor! The Times only has more US readers as opposed to the Munich Picayune because the humor is more upbeat. Censorship, ah yes, I need to read the Hutton Report again...

It is sad that protestors have to resort to such action to make their point. However, the Government would do well to listen and take heed at the anger that further expansion of Heathrow will cause. Think laterally and deal with increased air demand in innovative ways that does not include stretching an infra structure beyond its capable limits.
John Szepietowski, Weybridge, Surrey UK
"Why is the Times posting information showing where to join up with such anarchist groups?
If the time is to STOP editorializing in the news stories it should provide NEWS not incitement.
Groups supporting runway expansion and the benefits offered to the public should also be shown in this story.
This is a gross example of advocacy not journalism.
Public involvement and balanced consideration of the issues should be provided.
If the times wants to advocate don't do it in a news story.
For crying out loud, Fox news does a better job of separating FACT, FICTION, FANTASY, and news than the times does."

typical, protesters get excited about a 1 degree rise in average temps over a 100 year period in a country where people freeze to death.
meanwhile in the real world children are being slaughtered all over the middle east daily.
This is the politics of distraction.
Anyone for bird flu?

I'm so tired of ignorant (using the word in its most specific way-- meaning uneducated) people saying "it's really cold, so global warming can't be happening".
Go get a basic grounding in science (you might also have to accept that evolution happens) learn about the theories, models, data and observations that are part of the climate change/global warming discussion-- and then stand up and contribute from a perspective other than one of knee-jerk, spoon-fed sound bites prepared for you by others who are just as ill-informed. The facts are pretty clear-- the earth, particularly at the poles (whose temperature differentials versus temperate parts of the globe are a primary driver of our climate and weather) is warming and weather patterns are shifting.
Get the facts straight before you "call-out" others. It's not hard to do and might make this a real discussion rather than a bunch of fools hurling foolishness.
Sorry for the rant-- but this needed to be said!
Rob Hoover, NYC, NYC
Regardless of the protesters' intentions, isn't this indicative of a shocking lapse in security? If an employee in the parliament building could be persuaded to sneak banners and cuffs past perimeter security and up to the roof, who's to say there isn't an employee who could be persuaded (or tricked) into bringing a bomb or a rocket launcher up there or into other restricted-access areas? UK taxpayers should demand that someone in charge of the security at the parliament building be sacked.

Can I please point out to everyone that I live in London and am sick to death of all these anti-aviation loony left tree-huggers.
If there is any country in the world that will happily take these whinging moaning groaning luddites - please take em - we'll even fly them out.
Richard, London, Uk
Great job protesters. Admire you all. Certainly given our government (elected to represent us THE BRITISH PEOPLE) something to think about. As for the contribution by all the whining yanks, stick to your Fox News if that is all you aspire to and keep your oversized, interfering noses out of british issues. You are as irrelevant as your ill-considered and unintelligent views.
Lindsay, London, UK
Do we like the US approach of lock everyone up who does not conform to their view (or government view). One of the fundamental problems with the type of democracy we have in the UK is that if the politicians decide on a course of action there is virtually know method for the population to change their minds (It does not seem to believe in referendums and also no mechanism for such and doesn't seem to take much notice of petitions). Personally i would prefer Gatwick to expand before Heathrow with steeper flight paths into both (certainly for landing) and a high speed raised rail (mono or Maglev train following the M25) between the two.
Michael, London , UK
What exactly are the campaigners campaigning for? The environment (as in climate change) or the people who live in the flight paths.
If its for the people, then taking away a massive source of income to the city will only make them poorer, making them move further from the city and drive in effecting the climate. If its for collision safety then a plane out the sky (perish the thought) landing on a housing estate will get rid of the worst carbondioxide polluters on the planet, man.
I dont get their point. Swings and roundabouts to me.
Jimbo (yes, from the jet set), malmo , sweden
These âexpertsâ called for more hurricanes to hit the U.S., WRONG there has been less activity. Until they can get a prediction correct one or two years out they have NO credibility. Unless they can properly predict some general trend that is provable they are no better than Chicken Little âthe sky is falling, the sky is fallingâ. If not it called the weather and the weather has a tendency to change!
You can not link it to carbon emissions unless you can correctly determine the results. So far they can not link carbon to anything. So I will personally bet $1mm US dollars of my very own money that they can not tell me within 1 hurricane how many hurricanes and the strength of the hurricanes that will be formed in the Atlantic that will make land fall this year! I know that isnât as big a bet as it used to be with $1 million dollars worth about $100 pounds right now, but it is the best I can do.
Jeff in Miami Beach, Miami Beach, USA/FL
Thank god that some people still exist who will take action for something they believe in. Seems like most of the population has been lobotomised by reality TV and the bottom line.
So the goverment were just going through the motions by their so called "consultation" on runway three. For all you progressive pro-business types take a trip to Sipson Village before it is flattened and then imagine your own town going the same way in the name of progress.
This isn't about global warming or the enviroment, it's about commerce and goverment doing pretty much what they like because they can and people are too scared or lazy to do anything about it. Massive respect to the activists.
David, london, uk
Notice how global warming is now called climate change because global warming has been proven to be a fraud.
I hope young Commons insider with the security pass does hard time along with anyone else who conspired with him. It's hard to believe anyone would sanction this behavior.
Larry, French Lick, Indiana, USA
"Chris............global warming and greenhouse gases cause EXTREMES of global weather, not just hotter weather................ Doh!"
Yeah, I know, how ignorant can people be?
Anyway, hurray for demonstrators. I wish there were more (how about having a real go at the oil companies charging extortionate petrol prices?).
starling, Lancaster,
Err..why does everyone think Global warming is man made and we are all going to 'destroy' the Earth? Climate temperatures have fluctuated wildly over the entire life of the Earth, leading to Ice Ages and even periods of warm weather globally. Why are we preventing the Earth from doing what it would usually do? Who are we to stop its life cycle of extreme temperature changes? The whole global warming issue has been, in my opinion, solely raised so governments can keep a top on quickly developing countries and also so they can generate extra revenue from "Green Taxes" and other forms of taxes such as Congestion Charge (indirectly linked with Global warming through heavy traffic pollution). This is all just a phase that will probably last half a century before the goverments and these irrational pillocks who think they are 'protecting' our Earth find something else to winge about.
Swishi, London, UK
The real worry is the smokers sneaking onto the roof and discarding their cigarette butts willy nilly. It was similar carelessness that sent our National Motorcycle Museum up in flames not long ago.
Approfondi, Bristol,
Where is my link to a protest group that wants to sue all of these numpties for compensation re wasting police time? If football clubs are charged for policing why can we not sue these fools? Am sure Tamsin's mummy and daddy's deep pockets will cover the cost...
Anti third-runway campaigners have a point, but it is your actions and not your beliefs for which you are judged.
Neil Anderson, Bridetown, Barbados
So the Government supports the idea of a third runway, big deal!
They support the idea of many proposals, but not much happens.
A very loose justification for Civil Disobeidience.
On the other hand the organisers are not just "Another Overqualified Student" candidates anymore. They have now a proven record of acheivement which looks good on a CV, if they can just avoid the Criminal Conviction for Tresspass all will be well. ;)
Nick, Emsdetten, NRW / Germany
It's always about "Greenhouse" gas. Outhouse gas has been around forever and still "here we are". Everybody, calm down.
Roger C., St. Louis, Mo.
I mentioned the attributes of Google Earth a year or so ago to a politician. I sincerely hope its not been overlooked otherwise, another runway at Heathrow will look less important.
Janet, Binstead, UK
With activists, the purpose of an action is never the issue at hand, the purpose is to gain power. Whatever the cause--global warming, animal rights, immigration, etc.--the activist's goal is to circumvent the democratic process and restrict your freedom. To what end? To punish and control you, of course.
Jack Monday, Iowa City, Iowa
chris, long term trends over years still show a rising temperature. You cant just take one winter and base your entire hypothesis on it.
tim, london,
Greenhouse gasses does not necessarily mean that the global temperatures ONLY increase. It includes the effect of the gasses on the climate altogether. Yes, according to the experts it will get hotter but we also seeing the effect of extremes. Harsher winters, hotter summers.
Em, Madrid,
Greenhouse gasses my eye. We just had our coldest winter in decades, with China now covered in snow, and snow in Iraq too.

I will gladly accept climate ideology from an English major and someone else doing graduate work in animation. That seems fairly rational.
Isn't Heathrow the current world leader in airline delays? Methinks you folks truly need a third or even fourth runway.
