Teacher follows her heart to an African hut

Southampton A teacher is swapping her comfortable Hampshire home for a hut in rural Tanzania after finding love with a tribal elder.

Carole Woolgar, 51, has left her job at an adult education college in Winchester, having been conducting the long-distance relationship with Amri Shimata, 56, for five years. Ms Woolgar, whose new home in Mahenge has neither electricity nor running water, first visited the village to see a friend who was working there. She said: “Since meeting Amri I have been back to the village two or three times a year - and our romance blossomed. I have got involved with various projects in the village and eventually I decided that it was time for a change in life. The college where I worked was looking to restructure so it was the perfect opportunity. It had become harder and harder to say goodbye to Amri.”

The people are very friendly and, although she is learning Swahili to fit in, her partner speaks excellent English. “He even beats me at Scrabble,” she said.
