Thousands of pupils sitting their GCSE music exam may have thought their dreams had come true when they discovered that the answers were printed on the back of the exam paper.
Now, however, the printers' error has become more of a nightmare, as the students have been told that they may have to resit the paper.
The mistake was noticed by school pupils in Hereford and Worcestershire, who found that a list of composers printed on the back of the exam directly related to the questions on the other side of the sheet.
Some of the pupils dutifully put up their hands and reported the error to the invigilator. Others carried on with test. The examiners fear that some students may not even have noticed the error, creating an unlevel playing field when assessing the results.
The Oxford, Cambridge and RSA exam board, which issued the paper, said that it would make sure that no-one was disadvantaged by the error, which seems only to have affected some schools.
In a statement OCR said: "OCR regrets that a printing error may have affected a small number of marks on the GCSE Music question paper.
"We are putting procedures in place to identify the effect, if any, this had on candidates and to make allowances accordingly to ensure that no candidate is disadvantaged."
A spokesman for the Qualification and Curriculum Authority (QCA) said the examinations regulator Ofqual would be checking with the OCR to ensure that “appropriate measures were put in place”.

Perhaps the exam board should sort the issue themselves. Taking students' predicted grades etc to work out that 5% could work, maybe just scrapping the whole question. Whatever they choose, i feel having to sit re-takes would be un-fair.
cp, marlborough,
Says a lot about the state of education if most of the students didn't even look through the exam paper properly!!
J. Okell, Newcastle, U.K.
The vast majority of people did not recognise that the answers were there. I sat the exam...and I think that the uproar that has been made is pathetic! The answers given resulted in an extremely small proportion of the marks. Surely the grade boundaries will take all this into account.
Luke Hickey, Barry, Wales
well i am a GCSE student who took the exam...i only knew that the results were on the back because my friend told me after i had sat the exam.... i think we should all retake so that the results can be fair.
Emma Jones, Eye,
It's ridiculously unfair if they DON'T have to resit.
Some people didn't have the answers on the back, or sat different exam boards. It's entirely unfair for the other students to be at an advantage because of an exam board's sheer stupidity.
You would think it'd be the first thing they'd check for
Danielle, Wales,
This is a very bad error.
These pupils have studied hard for this exam and should not have to take the paper again.
Most of the students are good honest young people and I know that my son only noticed when he had finished his own paper. He did NOT cheat.
It is undermining the students.
G Hopkins, Kingswood, Bristol
It was only 5% of the marks in one of the fours papers that make up the GCSE anyway. Marks difference is negliable
Stephen Tordoff, Sheffield,
i sat the music exam on a different exam board so luckily i dont have this problem.
But if they've said there's going to be no resit, surely they will just ignore the questions which were helped, and will mark the paper out of 96 or whatever it should be.
Then nobody will have an advantage ! derr
TEmm, halifax,
that is ridiculous
how could such a massive error be made at such a vital time in these stundents lives
to make them re-do this exam is very unfair to them due to the stress and pressurer they are under at this time.
OCR should be ashaimed!
Chloe, Manchester,
I think all power to those who did read all the paper!
Veron, Preston,
I took the OCR music exam and I did not notice the helpful notes at all throughout the exam. I feel really annoyed about this issue especially if the OCR board expect students to retake this exam. Students already have enough exams to do and making them do another one is totally unacceptable.
Mia, Gloucestershire,
I noticed the answers almost straight away and at first was checking them with the answers to see if they actually were the answers, when i found that they were, I was shocked. Almost everyone in our exam noticed however I have heard that some schools did not recieve the helpful information.
Ryan , Coventry, Warwickshire
I took the OCR exam, and spotted the answers on the back.
However, I had got most of the questions right anyway, and only changed a couple in the last few moments. And in some cases, my first answer would have been accepoted anyway.
I dont think we had an unfair advantage atall!
Suzanne Curley, Leicester,
For more than twenty years government have been running down the standing of the professions, the doctors, the teachers, and don't forget the miners. Printing the answers on the exam paper gets rid of teachers of subject and markers, both, all in one fell swoop! Let's hear it for Baker and Clarke!
C. U. JAMES, GLASGOW, SCOTLAND
I sat the AQA exam. I think it is only fair that the OCR students re-sit the music exam. Everyone doing music GCSE AQA, EDEXCEL etc... Worked really hard. It is only fair the paper is be re done.
Rianna, london, england
I saw the answers on the back of the paper.I think the papers should be marked as normal. You are told you have two minutes to read the paper. If you chose not to read the paper, then that's your problem. We don't need the added stress of re-sits, and i've thrown my notes away!
Wil, St Albans, Hertfordshire
I have taken this exam and my paper did have the answers on the back, but i didnt know they were there!
its not fair if they take the mark boundry up or make us resit as some people may not have seen like myself!
The answers werent direct but could lead you to decisions you could have not made.
emma, solihull, uk
It may have only been a few marks, but I think it is fair enough to expect the students to resit the exam. I am a student myself, and I would expect to retake the exam if the answers were on the back, perhaps with consideration and a compromise of some sort from the exam board in the mean time.
Jessica, Manchester,
Is this how the government massages exam results to claim improving standards
David, Bristol,
I realised the copyrights were on the back when the exam had nearly finished, my exam mark wasn't enhanced because I had the right answers anyway, I really can't believe that the exam board published the copyrights in this format, how the couldn't have realised I'll never know.
James Longden, Scunthorpe,
The answers only amounted to five % of the marks and only three or four people in my class actually noticed it. I think that having to retake this exam would add more stress. Plus this exam was hard don't make me do it again.
Mike, Kidderminster, England
I recently did my Music exam, and i don't think because the Exam board made a mistake that we should be punishedfor their mistake and make us have to resit our stressful exam, it was hard enough the first time!
i've got too many exams to think about, i dont need another to think about.
Charlotte, Brighton, England
I took this exam, and I can say that there was only a minority of pupils within my group that actually saw the info. There was the copyright info, such as the composer and name of the piece. However, to get more marks you had to show musical knowledge. Why don't the board just take off 5 marks?
Sophie, Newark,
I agree, it's not fair to make us do the exam again just because of their mistake. We have so many other exams and making us retake one is not fair and will just make us more stressed.
Lucy, gloucestershire,
Heads must roll for this fiasco.
Des, Edinburgh,
Don't worry,apparently one in five carn't read.
R Newton, Redland, UK
I'm sorry, but there is no way in hell that I am going to do that exam again. I was already really stressed about it and having to do it again will just me so mad!
We already have numerous other exams to do and why do we have to pay for the exam board's stupid mistake!
Aseye, London,
