£2.7m boost for Gaelic language

A £2.7million package to build schools and boost educational support for the Gaelic language has been unveiled by Alex Salmond (Mike Wade writes). The First Minister announced the funding yesterday in Falkirk at the opening of the Mod, the annual festival of Highland culture. Thousands of participants and festival-goers are expected over the next week for the Mod, with people of all ages competing across a range of disciplines including Gaelic music and song, Highland dancing, drama, sport and literature. Meanwhile, Julie Fowlis, the Gaelic singer and musician from North Uist, pictured above, has been named as the government's new Gaelic ambassador. Two months ago, she was named BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year.
