Simon Jones's first championship meeting with his erstwhile colleagues was upstaged by an unknown, Bradford-educated seam bowler who has joined that handful of cricketers who made a first-class debut while officially designated overseas players.
Born in the Pakistani Kashmir, Imran Arif, 24, does not qualify as a Kolpak player and is not yet a British national, despite an English wife. Worcestershire thus needed to play him as a genuine foreign signing, although he has appeared for three county second XIs in the past 14 months.
After they declared on 457 for eight, their highest score this season, with Ben Smith falling one short of his first century for two years, Jones removed Richard Grant before rain claimed 18 overs. Arif was then unleashed. Generating more speed than Jones, he took a wicket in his third over and added two more in his next ten balls as Glamorgan, rattled by pace and batting with abandon, fell to 56 for four. At least Gareth Rees later showed character in his determined fifty.
Jones had earlier unsettled them more with the bat in an innings of 25 that included four sixes, one sailing over the hospitality marquee to land on a committee member's Bentley. Steve Davies preceded the onslaught with 83, his season's best, until outstandingly caught at short cover.
