Hampshire are expected to announce this week that Giles White will be the club's team manager next season, but there was speculation over the weekend that Duncan Fletcher, the former England coach, could also be appointed in an overseeing role.
White, the 36-year-old second XI coach, took over the first XI after Paul Terry resigned in August and under him the county rose from the relegation zone to finish third in the LV County Championship.
On Saturday he said that he was looking forward to continuing in the role next year. However, a Sunday newspaper reported that Fletcher, who resigned from his role with England after the 2007 World Cup, was considering an offer to take up an advisory position with the county.
Hampshire, who have signed Dominic Cork, the former England all-rounder, from Lancashire, were given a boost when Imran Tahir, the Pakistan A leg spinner who took 44 wickets in seven championship games last season at an average of 17 runs apiece, committed to the county for two more years.
Cameron White, the former Somerset all-rounder, has been added to Australia's squad for the four-Test series in India, which begins on Thursday. White replaces Bryce McGain, the 36-year-old leg spinner who was sent home last week with a shoulder injury, and will contest the one spinning position in the team with Jason Krejza, the uncapped off-break bowler.
Krejza conceded 199 runs in 31 wicketless overs as Australia drew their warm-up match against the Indian Board President's XI in Hyderabad yesterday. Yuvraj Singh made 113 and Wasim Jaffer 93 as the Indian side set the Australians 434 to win in less than two sessions. Although Simon Katich and Matthew Hayden were dismissed within 16 overs, an unbeaten half-century from Ricky Ponting ensured safety for the touring side.
