Steven Gerrard scored his 100th goal for Liverpool and Robbie Keane his first for the club as the Merseysiders coasted to their second Champions League victory in two outings, a 3-1 victory over PSV Eindhoven, to take control of Group D.

Gerrard, who had been denied a perfectly good goal against Stoke a fortnight ago, brought up the milestone in front of the Kop, crashing a 25-yard free-kick past Andreas Isaksson for Liverpool’s third with 14 minutes remaining.

The home side were already in cruise control by that stage, Dirk Kuyt slamming home the first from a Gerrard corner on five minutes after Isaksson had done well to keep out Fernando Torres’s initial shot.

Keane, who has been under pressure to open his account having made a £20.3 million move from Tottenham Hotspur in July, finally scored the first goal for his new club 11 minutes before half-time, neatly converting a well-directed right-wing cross from Torres.

Danny Koevermans pulled a goal back for the Dutch side 12 minutes from time.

Chelsea were held to a goalless draw by Cluj, the conquerors of Roma in their opening match, in Group A. The Romanians dominated for long periods against a Chelsea side who failed to get out of first gear, although Nicolas Anelka did miss a glorious chance two minutes from time. Problems increased for Luiz Felipe Scolari when Didier Drogba was carried off with a leg injury in the second half.
