Simon Jordan, the Crystal Palace chairman, has expressed his anger at the Football League transfer tribunal's decision to award his club an initial £700,000, rising to £1.25million, for John Bostock. The midfield player, 16, agreed a five-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur when his deal with Palace ended last week, but the clubs were forced to go to arbitration when they could not agree on a fee.
Jordan, who valued Bostock at closer to £5million, said that the decision gives big clubs licence to stockpile young players, knowing that they can be bought cheaply. “I feel mugged and brutalised, it is scandalous, and this sends a message to smaller clubs. Why bother to bring players through if tribunals cannot reflect the work that has gone in?” Jordan said. “The FA want to have the best national team, but if the best young talent sits in the reserves, what chance do we have? The transfer system is flawed.”
Bostock, who attracted a £900,000 offer from Chelsea when he was 14, became Palace's youngest player when he featured in the Coca-Cola Championship at 15 years and 287 days, in the home defeat by Watford in October, and he impressed with the England junior sides, captaining his country at under-17 level.
Neil Warnock, the Palace manager, who attended the hearing yesterday, proposed that his club should receive £2million plus a further £2.5million when Bostock played 40 matches for Tottenham. Palace listed fees paid for comparable players, such as Aaron Ramsey, who joined Arsenal from Cardiff City for £5million this summer. “Bostock is the best player in his position in Europe, which is why Barcelona and Arsenal watched him,” Jordan said. “This sends out a bad precedent.”
Southampton have forfeited some of the transfer fee that they were owed by Tottenham for Gareth Bale, the left back, to help their financial situation. The Championship club have accepted an undisclosed sum and have signed Tommy Forecast, the Tottenham goalkeeper, as part of the fee, which was based on appearances. Tottenham paid an initial £5million for Bale last summer.

John Bostock will be worth at least £700K in the future. England U17 captain, supportive family, good academic record, so has right character for success. This is simply a question of how much Palace have been robbed by this ridiculous valuation. Why would anyone develop a youth academy after this?
Nat, London, UK
It's tough for Palace but you cannot tie 15/16 year old kids down to long contracts and Bostock didn't want to be there so end of story.
mark, newcastle, england
Shocking decision. Jordan is absolutely correct to be outraged by this. If i were him, I would probably think twice about whether or not it was worth being in the game.
Adam Kennedy, Tokyo,
I feel Bostock has gone for the money and not the chance to improve, just look at the youth system and Palace and the number of young internationals that play for home nations, now compare that with spurs, it was always about the money for Bostock. John just check out what they did for Routledge!
Chris, Petts Wood, UK
I stopped reading when Jordan apparently said "Bostock is the best player in his position in Europe" lol. He may not even be the best young player in his position in London!
Pete, Tokyo,
not true.. jordan has sold every player that has had any value the last thing he wants is an asset not earninng him money the reason palace are not in prem is because he wont give managers the money to buy he wants all free transfers he runs the club on a shoestring.
david atkins, london,
I agree with Jordan. If we want a decent national side the big clubs have got to stop stockpiling the best of the younger talent. They only give some of them a limited number of games a season, when they should be playing at a high competitive level week after week.
Geoff Smith, VALENCIA, SPAIN
How anyone can claim that palace have no claim on Bostock is ridiculous. The club have supported and nurtured the boy. Jordan obviously wants to keep the best players at his club and why not? The FAs actions will merely set a precedent that will damage the youth acadamies at smaller clubs.
TJ, Leicester,
As 'another' Spurs fan, I too have a certain degree of sympathy for 'The Tango Man'.
Surely, of the many outcomes, few of them are palatable for football fans. Will 'small' clubs ensure their trainees sign 20 year contracts, or contracts with massive sell-on clauses inserted or just not developing?
Sean, Aberystwyth, Wales
I am a Spurs supporter so very mixed feelings on this. I am also a football fan and I do think Palace have been completly ripped off. I think FIFA need to step in because this cant happen again. How can the tribunal award Palace less money than we offered in the first place?
C.Lock, Southend,
I'm a Spurs fan but I agree that stockpiling good young players is a bad thing both for them and for the national team. Spurs now have a billion midfielders - Modric, Hudd, Bostock, Zok, Lennon, Jenas, Steed, O'Hara, Tainio, Taarabt. Nuts.
Tom S, Beijing, China
Maybe the Tango man will learn his lesson, I'm sure Tottenham would have paid more than this but his valuation was far to high, his greed cost him in the end.
Dave Peacock, Stevenage,
i have no sympathy for palace they have no claim on the lad the fact that he joined them as a lad counts for nothing every footballer in the world starts somewhere and 99.9% leave to further their career the fact is bostock wanted to further his career.£1.25 mill is not a bad sum
david atkins, london,
I have every sympathy with Simon jordan and Palace and indeed every non-premier league club,
The FA cannot pretend to serve the interests of the game while also sycophantically latching itself onto the premier league.
Football will die in this country if the FA continue to be in charge.
