Lewis Hamilton’s hopes of winning the Formula One World Championship were dashed yesterday, although only after a stewards’ investigation at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The British driver was given hope of a dramatic reprieve when the FIA, the world governing body of motor sport, looked into possible technical breaches but more than six hours after the race, Hamilton learnt that he had indeed finished the season behind Kimi Raikkonen, the new champion.
It would have been yet another twist to Hamilton’s extraordinary rookie season in Formula One but after long deliberations the stewards concluded that the result should stand.
Hamilton finished seventh and runner-up in the championship before the race stewards summoned representatives of BMW Sauber and Williams for alleged illegal fuel temperatures. Disqualification or demotion of the drivers involved - Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld, of BMW, and Nico Rosberg, of Williams – would have elevated the Briton to fourth, giving him the title by two points from Raikkonen.
In the end, a poor start and a technical glitch on his McLaren MP4-22 car put paid to Hamilton’s chances of becoming the first man to win the title in his rookie year. The 22-year-old from Stevenage in Hertfordshire went into the race four points ahead of Fernando Alonso, his McLaren Mercedes team-mate and bitter rival, and seven in front of Raikkonen, of Ferrari.
“It’s been a huge rollercoaster ride,” Hamilton said of a season in which his team were fined £50 million, a record in world sport, for their part in the spying row with Ferrari. “To think I have come from GP2 and I am now ranked two in the world is a positive thing. I go into next year full of confidence.”
Alonso, who finished the race in third place, saw his dreams of a third consecutive championship shattered. The Spaniard, who is unlikely to drive a McLaren again, finished on equal points with Hamilton but was third overall on countback.
It all went wrong for Hamilton at the start. Lining up second on the grid behind Felipe Massa, he tucked in behind the Brazilian but was passed on the outside by Raikkonen at turn one and seconds later on the inside by Alonso. Hamilton’s attempt to fight back against his teammate cost him dearly as he ran wide and dropped to eighth. The Briton’s day seemed to be done seven laps later when, having climbed to sixth, his car succumbed to a rare technical failure in the gearbox.
In the space of a few seconds, Hamilton slipped to eighteenth position. Then, as quickly as it had visited him, the glitch cleared. Hamilton fought bravely but earned only two points.
“It was not a great start,” he said. “I locked up behind Fernando to avoid hitting him and went wide. But I was quite relaxed knowing I had the pace to regain position. But when I was down-shifting into turn four, the car slammed into neutral. I coasted for a long time and then it clicked back in. From then on we had to manage the engine. I kept pushing to the end, thinking we could still get it.”
The stewards’ inquiry kept Hamilton’s dream alive temporarily but they concluded that “there must be sufficient doubt as to both the temperature of the fuel actually on board the car and also as to the true ambient temperature as to render it inappropriate to impose a penalty”. As the result came through, cries of joy could be heard from the Ferrari staff still at the track. However, the row might rumble on if McLaren appeal and little can be taken for granted in this Formula One season.

The one that hasn't been seeign much of Formula 1 is you. If you haven't noticed, Hamilton slid off the track three times: Nurburgring ( then put back on the track by the crane), China and Brasil
carmen, murcia, spain
it was not a rare technical failure in the gearbox. STOP EXCUSING HIM..he pushed the button of speed limit!!!!BIG MISTAKE!!!And now you complain about the others hwen the rules these year have changed in favour of Lewis!!!Thanks for doing such a great job,Ron!!!You are not even worth to work in kartings, jajajajajaj!!!!
Carlos, Helsinki, Finland
Stop puffing Hamilton's feathers . Yes he is a good driver, who also happens to be a Briton- hip hip hurray-, but face it guys, there are a bunch of good drivers out there, and Raikkonen now is best of the best.
Biron, Beirut, Lebanon
Give Hamilton the Renault... Then we will see if he is capable of winning the WC...
He has still to prove a lot of things.
About Dennis, the best thing he can do is to quit, although he is one of the owners
Barbara, Plymouth, UK
What's all this hype about Lewis Hamilton the rookie. He has only won 4 races. There you go again British media always trying very hard to control public minds. Will you ever learn it does not pay. Why ruin the mind of a young budding driver and Ron Dennis is not doing him any favours either.
Harjit Singhrao, Sonoma, USA/California
i read the comment; and i realise that some poeple hadn't saw the same race or what, the big looser is MASSA not Hamilton the poor guy gets the pol posision in his hone town, lead 90% of the race and then Jean Todt told him to let his N°1 to pass him by getting slower; but he has a contract extension last week got it
nawel, marseille,france,
Well done Ron Dennis ! Good choice. Your "Frankenstein" has fade away under real pressure. The "technical failure" in Hamilton's car came after he made a mistake and ran wide out of a corner, thus damaging the car. Who will asume the responsability of this new ( 8 years of them...) failure in McClaren ?
Rafa , Valencia,
Hamilton has only himself to blame for not being World Champion. I heard Jackie Stewart say on radio last week "he'll be World Champion so long as he doesn't try too hard to win in Brazil" and how true that was. However, the competitive nature of a young man got in the way, if he'd played the percentages, he could have let Alonso through at the first corner, and kept his car in good order, and finished 4th, after all there were only 4 cars capable of winning the GP, and his was one of them. He could have sat on Alonso's tail lap after lap, which would have made Alonso have to push hard and possibly make a mistake, and not even have to think about Kimi at all!!
Its tough on Hamilton, but he should have played the percentages like an old pro would have.
Jez Broadway, Worcester, England
Well done Ron. You sign a 2 times World Champion, he does an amazing job developing the car and you use it all for your own pleasure to see your kid win, team and sponsors interests came second to your plans. No doubt that Hamilton is a great driver but whether he is the best or not is still to prove. Race tactics were always in favour of your pupil and you made the man who made McLaren win again look like the villain in your fairy tale. You Ron have proven wrong and in the end you have what you deserve. No offence to the Bristish F1 fans, sure you have a winner at home.
Maria, ALC, Spain
Congratulations to Ron dennis he gives ALL to Hamilton and nothing to Alonso the 2007 pilot champion and Here is your prize "NOTHING" . CONGRATULATIONS. And congratulations to Vodafone, Santander, Mercedes and all the sponsors for give money to this subject.
Good job. No championship and a penalty of millions of euros. CONGRATULATIOS.
Ivan, Valencia, Spain
Congratulations Lewis an congrulations McLaren. You only failed but not yesterday, the day you choose for a Rookie and not for Alonso. You have what you bet.
jlbriones, Madrid,
By the way, and about some McLaren comments about Alonso's isolation, I have three questions:
1) What's McLaren engineers native language? English
2) What's Dennis or Hamilton's native language? English
3) What''s Alonso`s native language? Spanish
Are you sure was it Alonso's fault (as McLaren says), or was it that he didn't get enough support as a foreign newcomer, taking into account that unless other years (Kimi and Juan Pablo), his teammate was also British?..... He didn't have any integration problem ever before in his meteoric & very successful career. For what I've read in this paper, Times opinions have not been very helpful or realistic.
Alfonso Gutiérrez, Madrid, Spain
Gosh... I certainly hope that Fernando leaves McLaren. I cannot stand all the Spanish whigning anymore... Come on, face it, McLaren have always had an equity policy with regards to drivers and have lost many championships as a result of this. How many championships could Mika Hakkinen have won if David Coulthard was NOT given any chance of racing him or challeging for race wins? Ron Dennis may have not won anything, but the team is still great and will still remain a global brand whether or not they win world championships.
lawrence Johnson, cape Town, South Africa
To J Nystrom.
You're wrong! If Fernando goes back to Renault, it means that next year McLaren will be fighting for entering the Q3, nor getting the world championship (like past year). Or do you really think that the evolution in the car was due to a rookie?
McLaren got what Ron Dennis deserved: Nothing at all.
And seems that LH is not so good, since he couldn't win even with all the help from the maFIA.
And their last try... pathetic! Cheating Fernando is easy, but cheating Ferrari...
By the way... How could McLaren know that the Fuel temperature was 2 degrees colder than it should be?
Manuel, A Coruña, Spain
Regarding the World F1 Champioship the onlt thing to say is that Justice has been done.
Rio Peretti, lucca, Italy/Australia
All of Alonso's supporters seem to think that he is the greatest thing that walked on earth. I think he is a great driver but a greater whiner. If he just did his job of giving his best on the track, maybe the results would have been different.
Hamilton on other hand seemed to be too narrowly focused on setting a record-the first rookie to win the championship. I hope in all this his humility will return. He definitely has the potential to be a greater champion!
Alas, the iceman wins. Proving that if you just concentrated your attention and skills on the track rather than politicking or whining of it, you still can turn the wheels to favour you.
nathan, Hong Kong, China
For Nystrom, USA
Spaniards are not whining and crying, you know? We have a double Champion, driving at circuits that are so different than a "donut" like your poor Indy.
If you think that McLaren and Dennis are worked well this season, then take a look at the results. A Champion like Alonso deserves a little more respect.
Good for Ferrari and Kimi, this is a truly team
Pelambres, Madrid,
Well done Lewis Hamilton you had a great season, most unfortunate that you didnt cap it off with the world championship. But their will be many seasons more for you , And at the start of the season would you or any one else have imagined that you would be runner up ,1 point adrift of the champion. Looking forward to see you drive next season .
Antoine , Warsaw, Poland
It's a shame to see the spite emanating from the Spaniards. I guess we can see where Alonso gets his spiteful nature from. Congratulations to Raikkonen, he's truly a great driver and much more deserving of the title than Alonso, who throughout the season was disgraceful in his behaviour. Hamilton has answered his critics by proving he can contend for the title of world champion in his first year. I am sure he will go on to win many races and championships. Again, congrats to Raikkonen, a world champion and Hamilton, a future world champion. I predict this will be the last we see of Alonso. Who would want to partner a team with such a sore loser?
Foo, Edinburgh, Scotland
This last appeal is the very last straw!! How humiliating! I really hoped Ron would question his management skills after this disastrous outcome. He could have won all, but leaves empty-handed. Surprisingly, he resorts to his last twist. Would fuel irregularities make his lose the race? For goodness sake, Hamilton made a mistake which cause overheat in the ventilation system. No one is to blame but himself. Congratulations to Kimi and a well-managed team! Bravo for Alonso! Youâve finished with your HEAD HELD HIGH!!. Shame Ron didnât give you the slightest support!
Alicia, Leeds,
Hope that Alonso leaves MClaren. It's a pitty, 'cause I was very proud for having a spanish driver in a great team such as MClaren, but, after this horrible season I realized that english seniority and class are not inside the F1 world. England doesn't deserve a representative like Mr Dennis.
What it hurts me most is that Ron's attitude prevented Alonso from winning his third title this year, because we all know that he was going to do it...
PS. Excuse me for my English...
Dani, Oviedo (same city as Fernando), Spain
Ron Dennis has done it! The way he managed the team this year was incredible, zero points in the constructors champioship and the ridiculous in pilots. (8th in a row). Well done man.
Victor, Valencia, Spain
Reading the commenst demonstrates that many Alonso supporters haven't been watching this season. Alonso drove off the track at 2 GPs and crashed out at one. Lewis failed to finish in China and drove off the track once. If the problem with Lewis Hamiltons car had afflicted Alonsos car then the Spanish conspiracy theorists would have been in full voice. I think that the strategy that McLaren were on meant that Lewis Hamilton would have found it difficult to win anyway, and the gearbox problem just exacerbated the problem.
David Leslie, Perth, Scotland
A brilliant end to the season. I'm disappointed that Hamilton lost, I feel sorry for Massa not being allowed to win his home Grand Prix, but as he said himself at the press conference "I was not in a position to challenge for the world championship". I bet that new contract they just gave him took the sting out of it a bit.
As for Alonso, I'll shed no tears for him but all this nonsense about "supportting the number one" driver is ridiculous. The simple fact that McLaren have had two excellent drivers racing each other all season has made this a brilliant year for GP. Remeber when Prost and Senna were in the same McLarens? Were they supporting the number one? No, they were both committed professional looking to win the championship and McLaren won the constructors title as a consequence.
If there isn't a team prepared to let their drivers truely race next year, the season will be weaker for it.
Well done Kimi!
Rick , Dubai, UAE
"...his car succumbed to a rare technical failure in the gearbox"
Er, you forget to mention that the failure was not random. It was the result of a driving mistake by Lewis Hamilton (off track excursion of the right rear).
Martin, Oviedo, Spain
Congratulations... MERCEDES-MCLAREN...for not trust in a two times champion of F1.....

Kimi only won because Massa let him through to win - if Massa had won the race Hamilton would be the world champion as he so deserved!!!

Lewis frnakly can't loose - a rookie second in the title fight? NICE.

What an amazing result to an "interesting" championship. Looking at all these comments, virtually all from Spain are McLaren and Lewis Hamilton bashing, whilst many reciprocating messages are calling Fernando Alonso a baby. Well I support neither, and all in all, McLaren really have shot themselves in both feet, many times with a machine gun. Hamilton has whined as much as Alonso, just not as much in public as his teammate - with the whining in Monaco, then by refusing to abide by the team to let Alonso through in Hungary. The end result, is that what goes around comes around. What will be interesting will be next season. It's a given that Alonso will leave McLaren back to Renault, where he'll no doubt tell Renault of McLaren's development, whilst Ferrari are Ferrari, and BMW will claw some more time out of the top two teams. Who would partner Hamilton, knowing that the team is based around him, and do you really think they can develop the car? I seriously doubt it.
Harm, Newcastle, UK
Por favor, no more sour grapes from Spain! Hamilton is the best thing to happen to F1 since Eddie Jordan.
Gina, Ascot,
I've just read the 2 comments that explain the season. 1st it was Fernando who cheated on Ferrari and 2nd that fernando didn't try to win on Sunday. Well, contrats to the 1st one for awakening all F1 on the real issues covering our dear sport and God save your inocence and goodheart if you haven't still realized that Fernando was driving a Mini the whole weekend in Brazil.
Pura, Toledo, Spain
what happened to fair play and knowing how to lose???I wasn't keen on Alonso but I am certainly not keen on the the Dennis circus!!! I think the W.Champion deserved to win as he fought like a gentleman!!
maddison, camberley, england
I think McClaren didn't expect to have two world class drivers on their hands this year. At least they won't have the same problem next season! And I strongly believe were it not for the gear box problem, Hamilton would have won square and fair in the end. Decent performance from Kimi thou! (rather him than Alonso!)
jim, Hong Kong ,
Spaniards have the same coloured way of looking at Alonso as Brits (including press) of lloking at McLaren and Hamilton, even when the kid has still won nothing. Let´s skip Brit comments about Spaniards or viceversa and focus on the facts:
1) Alonso has been 2-times WC in a team like Renault with less than what Ferrari or McLaren had at the time. Noone in Britain talked then about Alonso´s atrange isolated behaviour...
2) If Dennis would have done the right thing, at this time McLaren and Alonso would have won both Cons & Pilots WC, and Hamilton would have spinned his wheels for next season.
3) Hamilton lost the WC due to lack of experience. Wasn't it obvious from the very beginning?
4) As Schumacher once said: "I didn't go to McLaren due to fundamental differences with Dennis".
5) Why in the last two races Alonso's qualifying and car behaviour has gone so badly. In the speed trap he was the best, but his car was running 1sec slower per lap that Hamilton's and both Ferraris?
John Grimshaw, Newcastle, UK
Everybody seems to neglect sheer facts:
1) Hamilton was passed by Raikkonen at the start
2) was then passed even by Alonzo
3) had then a problem with his gear box
Therefore 2 mistakes and a tech problems. So what?
He lost on the field.
Is he now to win what he unbelivably lost by appealing? is it a crack?
Marco, Rome, italy
I for one would like to say congratulationsto Kimi - stunning victory! I do hope this stands as I think it would be fair, plus I think Hamilton needs a clean sheet for next season, not a shadow of controversy following him. Well done to Hamilton too - 2nd is not a bad result for him. As for Alonso, I think people are overlooking a lot of conduct from him which was unprofessional (and has everyone forgotten the rather unsavoury role he played in the "spygate" thing). I suspect that the situation could all have been resolved diplomatically at once stage but obviously escalated due to toys out of the pram. Hamilton has had his fair share of tantrums too, I suspect, but Alonso should know better at his age. I suspect that his Prima Donna tendancies were how he ended up in the postion he did - people tend often get treated the way they treat others! I notice lots of vitiolic and mocking comments from Spain - well Alonso didn't win either, ha ha ha!!
Leigh, Birmingham , UK
Oh dear our friends from Spain have a very coloured view of their favoured son Alonso. I dont think this has been a season where any of the top teams or drivers have come out spelling of roses except the man who finally won the championship. Lets hope that next year F1 will be more about racing and sportsmanship
mike , Canterbury, U.K.
Lets all just remember that it was Alonso that cheated and NOT McLaren.
Third place is about what he deserves. It makes me think that Alonso may have cheated before to get to Champ.
Good luck to Lewis next year, so you can shut up your critics. A brilliant first year and without you this years F1 would have been boring.
Well done also to Raikkonnen as you worked hard for your title.
Paul, Sheffield, UK
F1, a mix between Eastenders, Magic Roundabout and Biggles. If it were a soap opera it would be pulled as too esoteric. Whatever happened to motor racing?
mike gee, bournemouth, uk
Boy are the comments from the Spanish commenters pathetic!!!. Are you all saying Allonso can only win races when his other team mate helps him. Clearly he is not as good a driver as we may have believed, if that's the case. Both drivers had the same cars, so it was down to driving ability and stratagy. Unfortunatly for us in Spain Alonso was just not good enough. Congratulations Kimi, you deserved the drivers championship.
Arturo, Barcelona, Spain
For all the above comments from the spaniards I have one this to say, Alonso still did not finish above Lewis in the drivers table and even without the distraction of Lewis he still could not win the championship. Ferrari do not want him next year but he still wants to stay at McClaren who are the second best team. So he is obviously not that upset with his team.
Derek, Thatcham, Berkshire
Somebody in McLaren forgot this is not only sport but biz also. I would like to know sponsor's thinking. We are talking about a huge amount of Pounds they will loose!. Ron: do you really thinks you did the right choice?. Don't you care two hoots?. Lewis is a good driver. In fact he's a very good one. But he's still a novice and this was not yet his time.
I want to congratulate Kimi. As Alonso said, he has been the best. And he was part of a team.
olaznog, Pamplona, Spain
If Alonso really wanted to win why did he not drive to win, he just didnt want Hamilton to win, he made it look so obvious and it would have been embarrasing to be beaten by a rookie in his first season. Alonso drove like a tourist on the country lanes of England. Shame on him, it is clear he hates Mclaren and wanted to make them suffer.
By the way, anyone remember that a stewards enquiry after the first race of the season showed that Ferrari used an illegal piece of equipment which gave them an unfair advantage in winning. They werent penalised by the FIA, so would Kimi have won if they had been penalised? Just shows who the FIA's loyalties lie with.
H, Newcastle, UK
Congratulations to McLaren?. To Ron Dennis?.
Not with all the sarcasm of the world!
Now is when we must be proud to be Spanish and praise the hard work and effort of Fernando Alonso. That, despite his team, his companion (for call it somehow), the sports director and the FIA, has finished to only 1 point of the first.
Moreover, much respect for Raikkonen, but nothing of congratulations. He simply has benefited from this world championship, this pathetic world championship.
Congratulations Alonso, you have proven to be a professional pilot and matchless. Thanks Alonso.
Tazan, Malaga,
The last two races were run in that meeting where McClaren were fined £50 mill. Ferrari walked away from that meeting knowing they would be allowed to win the drivers championship as well as the constructor's championship.
They couldn't have thrown out the McClaren drivers , it would have ended the glamorous money spinning circus that is F1 for this season to early. The grand puppet master himself Bernie Ecclestone had too much to lose in the shape of the rising star that is Lewis Hamilton, so the inevitable compromise was made, saving face for McClaren ,Ecclestone and Ferrari got their pound of flesh.
A quick push of a button the gearbox is disabled , wait until he is completely out of the race , enable the gearbox again, or it could be done by text.
Nick Dixon, Sutton Coldfield, England
To all the Spanish readers of this page - if Ron Dennis is so terrible and your poor defenceless Fernando is being so badly treated, why don't you all get together and start a Spanish F1 team? Now that would be funny!
Frank Drake, Plymouth,
I think Hamilton has done himself proud. Even if he didn't win the championship - he still has it all to win - not to lose.
susannah, Shaftesbury, United Kingdom
Am I the only Spanish person to think that Alonso did not deserve to win - he has not acted like a champion and is at least as guilty of un-sporting like behavior as Ron Dennis . Lets all stop being nationalistic and blindly supporting our fellow countrymen regardless of how they behave.
Well done Kimi - better luck next time Lewis and grow up Alonso.
Emilio, Madrid, Spain
Unbelieveble how McLaren lost the oportunity of winning beting for Hamilton and doing everything againts Alonso. And please, kick off Hamilton´s father all the time crying, who the hell he thinks he are? Mercedes, please, fires Ron as well, a very bad manager
Go Alonso
Ricardo, Alicante, Spain
In sport, seniority counts for little. That's what Alonso taught Schumey in 05 and 06.
Alonso couldn't seem to remember that when he moved to McLaren. Not even Raikkonen made demands that Massa be held back just so he could be no.1 driver; the Ferrari boys just did minimum whining and maximum driving, even against each other.
Alonso's unsporting behaviour has not only lost him respect from the F1 fraternity (except from Renault), but from observant F1 fans who used to root for him.
One hopes Alonso will learn and mature to become a worthy spokeman for F1. Hamilton certainly will.
s2, singapore, singapore
CONGRATULATIONS KIMI AND FERRARI!
2 excellent racing cars for 2 excellent drivers...What a difference!!!. This is a good example of equality opposite to Mr.Dennis' one...
God's justice, pride has been fairly punished...A "king?" without crown...To win respect you must show it first.
After that, can you continue to scorn a double champion who always won with fair play and who worked to take YOUR TEAM to the summit of F1?. "Bitter" Alonso has done an epic season in an awful atmosphere...You're our HERO!!!!!...And what's overtaking!!!
Silvia, Barcelona, Spain
I really wanted to write something constructive about the failings of Alonso which none of the Spanish fans seem to have mentioned here, but reading through comments mocking Hamiltons father, suggesting that Ron Dennis "Cheated" his own driver, or even that Fernando comes out of this looking like a "good sportsman", I'm inclined to just laugh.
3rd place and that's as high as he'll ever get now that he's burnt his bridges with the only team to offer him a decent car. Enjoy the Summer Fernando!
Rick , Dubai, UAE
Its incredible how alonso passed hamilton when he had a car significatly slower than lewis one (mclarens equality?). Thanks God for this race, justice is done, no award for cheaters! Kimi deserves the championship, no doubt.
thomas g. python, manchester, UK
Congratulations to Ron Dennis and the McLaren managers. It would be difficult to put into words what is the worst way to manage a racing team, but there is no need. Through all this season, they just showed all the world how it is done, pushing for an unexperienced rookie, who happens to be his daughter's boyfriend, against a world champion. That is just brilliant. People over at McLaren and Mercedes are surely delighted. Instead of wondering if Alonso will stay in the team for the next year, we should be considering if Ron Dennis will remain its boss.
Pablo, Cambridge, USA
Hi Ed.
First of all, I would like to congratulate you for this blog. I don't always agree with you, specially when R.Dennis said that Alonso tried to "buy" some McLaren mechanics, because you -and Ron, even and Daddy- know that that's an usual practice in many other F1 drivers, and you said nothing to deny Ron's lies. Now:
1) Last 2 years, FA evaluated carefully what he needed in order to become F1WC. He realized that it wasn't neccesary to win Brazil race, and you know the result: F1WC (twice).
2) This year in Brazil, incredibly LW decided to fight against FA (he didn't "thought" that it was no neccesary to fight and only needed to ve conservative)... and you know the result.
LH has demonstrated to be a talented pilot, lucky to be in McLaren as a rookie, but in my opinion, if he doesn't learn to use his brain inside the cockpit... maybe could become another J. Button.
That's the main difference between a F1 World Champion (Alonso) and a "one more talented pilot".
Juan Carlos, Madrid, Spain
I also think that Alonso should grow up. If he cannot race in a sport that sometimes needs teamwork he should go and be a cyclist or something. My hopes were on Lewis. I dont know who is hurt more me or him. I hope he does better next year. As for Alonso......... you WERE a 2 time champ. Its over now.
Belinda, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa
The best tactics won. If i remember correctly Ferrari contacted Alonso before the Brasilian GP only to make LH paranoic. It was enough to put even more pressure on the guy, at least that's what i thin it was, why else would be fighting with Alonso when at that point he was champion. He must have tought that Ferrari would rather see Alonso champion and would let him pass. If it's true i think it was brilliant. This is of course just speculations. But you ahve to wonder why Ferrari contacted Alonso at that point in time.
The fact is LH blew it. He has noone to blame. About the hydraulic problem he had on lap 8, i woudn't be surprized if he, himself have something to do with it. The pressure he was under at that moment made him press wrong buttons or something...i mean hydraulic problem don't just come and go.
Anyways, big congratulations to Kimi! Perfect race for him in all aspects. What a team Ferrari is!!! This victory must be sweeter than the ones with Schumy!
Dennis Ingeborg, Uppsala, Sweden
I will be a very disappointed F1 fan should Lewis Hamilton be crowned champion. He has driven carelessly many times, yet never punished or cautioned (remember what happened to Sato vs Michael Schumacher couple of years ago). Yet, if he becomes champion after an appeal, I think the world of F1 has gone mad and sad to say, will lose me as their fan.
Sophie , Sheffield, UK
Having read all of the spanish inquisitions mutterings about justice and nepotism it jus tmakes me smirk how much hatred can be dished out, Yes It has been a bit of a strange season and one i'm not qualified to judge. Kimi did very well and deserved the win. There are no conspiracy theories just bad luck and dare I say bad blood that has been spilled.
Hamilton is a gifted racer otherwise he wouldn't be there in the hot seat and that goes to all of the drivers. Yes he took a chance in China and paid for it but he'll learn from that and no one knows better than himself! Obviously we are all armchair experts and know what is good and bad....But that is the problem we dont know and therefore we should let the real experts sort it all out.
Paul, Derby, England
All this just shows that Ron should simply be asked to go. This is the summary of his year:
1. The McLaren Mercedes brand has lost a lot of credibility. Who can trust Mercedes as a brand if they need to steal secrets from competitor car manufacturers to make a good car?
2. I am sure that other sponsors like Grupo Santander and Vodafone will be very happy with their investment...
3. The have lost 100Mill USD on the fine
4. Sales of Mercedes in Spain have either gone down or very clearly have not seen the increase that Renault experienced in the past two years while Alonso was there.
5. And on top of it, sport wise they have won NOTHING...
How on earth will anybody keep Ron Dennis in the job???...
Gonzo, Singapore, Singapore
Congratulations Mr Dennis, your wonderful strategy of creating havoc at your own home has handed all the titles to Ferrari. Surely Ferrari should send you a nice present for your excellent job. As for Hamilton: unexperience at its best. A hopeless hopeful rookie world champion. Better luck next season.
Leuman Royce, Malaga, Spain
It is a shame that so many negative views should come from Spain on Hamilton as a driver, the guy is good, and has done wonders in his first season. Complain against the team if you must, but dont celebrate a drivers failure, thats just makes you look cheap.
Kimi won it fair and square in the last race ,McLaren should forget the fuel issue, but probably has to push it all the way... sponsors, money etc etc .
We should put this season to bed and look forward to a really good season next year. I believe that Hamilton will do just that, (his father was on tv at the end of the race, he didnt hide away, he was proud of his son, and so he should be. perhaps Spanish tv didnt show that)
Alonso is a great 2 time champ, I cannot accept that he can complain about not getting fair treatment on the one hand and demand number one treatment on the other? If he was good enough, and if the car was good enough, he would have won, he didnt, neither did Hamilton. End of story
Mick, London,
ALONSO is simply the best!!!!!!Hamilton is really silly!!!!I think Ron Dennis have to dimit!!!!
Kimi Raikkonen has been the best this year because he has had a very good team!!!!
Alonso you are ou champion!!!!
yop, Madrid, ESPAÃA
The same car? are you sure? well, maybe the same coloured car, but... used tyres instead news for Alonso, mysterious mechanical fails in Alonso's car, internal espionage of Alonso's telemetry, a rescue team putting Hamilton in race after a BIG ROOKIE ERROR.
Yes, of course, the same car and the same treatment for both drivers. And I'm the Queen Elizabeth III.
If Hamilton can't win after all of this dirty tricks, maybe he must return to the karting championship in his village for one or two years more. I think he needs more training

JUSTICE has been done!
It would have been the ultimate travesty to have Hamilton win the F1 championship driving for a team found guilty of cheating at the highest level. While Lewis did not cheat,he benefitted mightily from a team that was caught red-handed.The only reason he had not been docked points was for commerrcial interests, not for judicial ones .It is also very interesting to note that from the time that Stepney was no longer able to give inside info on Ferrari's set-up;fueling stops etc to McLaren-Lewis and the McLaren team suddenly did not perform as they had before Stepney was caught. This has been a nasty year but we are spared the spectacle of a cheating team winning F1.
Well done Kimi!
Next year we will be able to see if Lewis is any good driving a car which has not benefited from the illegal help and insider info his team got this year.If he wins, then he will be a true champion, even if he drives for a team led by scoundrels.
C.Elder, London , UK
I think the stewards inquiry should be directed to the fact that against the odds there was a high run of betting on Raikkonen to win this race. It all seems highly supsicious given that I've never seen a team allow their driver to wear his tyres out completly or for the car to suddenly stop working and then start working ( or pull in a driver in 3 times when it could be avoided). Given the wireless technology available allowing remote alteration of the cars performance from the pit it seems very odd. I suspect that as a result of the spying investigation the regulators would have preferred to ban the drivers but feared the effect on viewing figures and as such came to an understanding that nither drivers should be allowed to win this season. Given the reports that Alonso allegedly attempted to blackmail Ron Dennis, blocked Hamilton in a qualifying session and ran him off the track yesterday I believe he'll struggle to find a competitive team next season and quite rightly.
Mike, cardiff, UK
A genius, this Ron Dennis.
An actual genius.
Tato Dulanci, Vitoria, Spain
1- Lewis did a great job in his first season
2- Dennis screwed it all up putting so much pressure on a rookie
3- Fernando gave Lewis the opportunity of fighting for the world championship, first developing the car and second letting him copy his car setup before every race
Luis, Madrid,
Great performance from McLaren, great "equality" among Alonso and Lewis' cars, great fairplay from Dennis.
I've been a F1 holligan for more than 30 years and it is the first time I feel ashamed of all this circus. As Alonso said last year this is not a sport any longer, but now it is also dirty. How I miss Hill, Senna, Fitipaldi, Arnoux , ... heroes of my childhood.
Valentin ALonso, Oviedo , Spain
Talk about small minded and petty comments from the people of spain. Alonso have behaved like a spoilt brat throughout without bone of fair play in his body. So what if he was 2 time world champion. When a talented rookie can beat him time and again in the SAME car, he has to resort delaying tactics and trying to push his team mate off the road. With a team mate like alonso, who needs enemies. SHAME ON YOU ALONSO. Let us see what next year brings us.
James Wong, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Shame of MCLaren, Ron Dennis and Hamilton. Bad team.
Patricio, Madrid, España
Incredible, you never see Hamilton.s father when the guy looses. Hope McLaren has learned the game and the importance to make the proper decisions as Ferrari has done. Little BIG Alonso is not a teacher, is a worldchampion, 2 times. Poor Daddy Boy Hamilton... Too many children in this team!
Gloria , Tenerife,
Hamilton has what he deserves!!!!!
Isabel, Castellon, Spain
Sorry Lewis, Raikkonen has been better than you, you are too much ambitious.
Victor, Barcelona, ESPANYA
I would like to see how many races will win Hamilton the next year, without Alonso. Who will cry then?
I will feel happy when Alonso leave McLaren-Mercedes, and leave ron with his love.......
Juan Carlos, Madrid, Spain
I think the problem was the estrategy of the team. Ron Dennis have to revise all his decision during the season. Hamilton is a good driver, I have nothing to say against that. But MacLaren could have Championship and lost everything, because they gave his back to Alonso making an incomprehensible team´s strategy. I hope to see next season Alonso and Hamilton in differents team, and all of us will enjoy a good competition without controversy.
Alejandro, Sevilla, Spain
Answering a so-called "Nystrom" from New York USA. Can you tell me how a big country with 300 million people haven't a quality F1 pilot, nor a tenist player, nor a soccer team...only doping athletes?. Why do you dare to call little fernando a double world champion?. I beg your pardon for my english but it is becoming more useful in your country to speak spanish....
Peter Brasslamp, Barcelona, Spain
I feel bad for Lewis becuase he has driven a great season. To me he is not the looser but McLaren. In the end, Alonso was the more experienced driver and Ron Dennis has been unable to manage the relationship with his drivers and among them. I expected much more from that team.
Ignacio Pinedo, Alicante, Spain
Great performance the McLaren...ha ha...in Ferrary they are astonished about how a team / driver can lose so many points in two races...I won't bet any money in the english driver!!
Juan Luis, Istanbul, turquey
Alonso is two worl champion. Hamilton is only the second tie with alonso and with a better car. Fantastic management Mrs Denis: shoot trhash the numeber 1. Congratulations to Kimi and Ferrari. Orgogglio Ferrarista and british shame. Força Ferrari. Força Rosso. Força latin power. I hope to see a Fernando with Ferrari.-
a. rubio, Barcelona, spai
Marius, you can say whatever you want but the truth is that Fernando Alonso has been harm by McLaren
My congratulations to Kimi
Fernando, Galicia, ESPAÃA
Justice is done.
Congratulations Kimi.
Congratulations to Dennis, Hamilton's daddy and Ecclestone.
Knutsen, Oslo/Madrid,
Let's face it McClaren brought this upon themselves by their inept race management in China. All Hamilton needed to do was finish the China race is a reasonably high position. Had he gained 3 or 4 points in China then a moderate finish in Brazil was all that was needed. Keeping him out on those crappy tyres in China is what cost him the championship. Hamilton seems like he is the fastest driver but when it comes to race management Ferrrari seem to be better organised.
Kevin Miller, Tonbridge,
Excellent lesson to Mr.Dennis and Mr.Hamilton (including Hamilton Daddy). Humility is first in the life, and you have been prepotent ones. Congratulations to Ferrari, and next year will be Fernando who clears the victory to you.
Astur, Oviedo , Spain
so, now all Uk should be proud of McClaren, Cause at least they have get this main goal this season. Alonso hasn´t won. Well so Now I hope That Banco Santander and its 4000 million pounds away Mc Claren cause McClaren is not wellcome now in Spain, and that Denis Realise what he has done as a Manager this year. Alonso was the two times champion, and Hamilton the rockie. That´s it. This is UK.
Roberto, Paisley, Scotland
It seems that to be a british driver in a british team is not enough to win the f1 championship (owned by a british man). Alonso 2 - Hamilton 0. Thanks, Hamilton, from Spain.
Occipitante, Málaga, Spain
Ron we hope you learn a lesson..... bet for the woldchampion is more save that a Rookie, hamilton is a Super class, but Fernando is more experience, and this is a business.. they risk, and they lose the Woldchampion. If the Mc Pilots politics were diferent... maybe today the thinks will be diferents... Congratulations kimi.
Emilio, Las palmas, España
Mclaren deserved this. Dennis should quit the team after this embarrasing result. The whole world is laughing at Mclarens strategy. If Hamilton and his dad did not blew away the Hungarian race things probably were not as they are now. Yesterday was proved that Hamilton sinks under pressure. Sorry dude you deserved. We will see next year without Alonso´s knowledge how far you can go. maybe your father could tune up the car. Mclaren will go back to the times of Raikonnen.
jacobo, madrid, spain
ridiculous mclaren, ridiculous hamilton ... drivers' & constructors' tittle bye bye!! all the world laugh at you, congratulations
Eduardo, madrid, spain
It's quite simple: why Lewis tried to to fight back against Alonso? Why? That was the only reasonf of Lewis car' technical problems. At the end, fourth position would have been enough! ... So please forget about fuel excuses: Lewis has lost F1WC on his own (not to mention Ron Dennis striking incompetence). Remember: 12 ponts ahead of Alonso in Japan, and finally Raikkonen is the new World Champion. Mac Laren = pathetic chums!
Fernando, Barcelona, Spain
Congratulations to ron denis,.
Thios is the "good" way , to make a team
it would be a business case in the future in harward
"How to make a team"
really congratulations
Ignacio, madrid, nmadrid
Congratulations McLaren! You didn´t diserve to win, then youi get to the top. I hope F. Alonso leave you to compite on equal terms against Ron´s child.
Alejandro R Moreira, O Porriño, Galicia
I really believe that Alonso, Hamilton and Raikonen are excellent. Nevertheless it is obvious that Hamilton is a rookie. He is very good but he has still a lot to learn. Formula 1 is nowadays decided in someoneâs desk rather that in the tracks and it really damages the sport. I believe it is still possible that we hear from a decision that makes Hamilton win the championship, after a well thought judge decision.
Sergio, Lisboa, Portugal
Whining is what Hamilton did in Hungary, what Hamilton did in Monaco and what Hamilton has been doing all the season... as a 5 year old child each time he couldn´t make it first... he is a great driver.... but the second place of F1 Championships is full of great drivers.... to win a championship you have to be one of the best and he still has a lot to learn....
Dave Burrows, Leicester, UK
Alonso was the champion'06, and isn't now for McLaren decissions. No more
Perico, Jailinsiu, Madagascar
Two drivers with great chances of winning the title and no one did, thatâs about right it is called McLaren management = cock up
john, london,
Ron Dennis go home! Bad, bad, very bad job. Hamilton is not a good pilot.
David, Jerez, España
Good Job, Ron!! The "equality" between your drivers is perfect: 109 points each one. FANTASTIC!!
Jose Leon, Vigo,
Has justice been done? The 'road' has spoken in the most 'real' race of this championship.
Congratulations to Ferrari and its Team!
Even in this case a 'Real Team'. Sure Hamilton would have won - I don't know if in a clean way... - should even McLaren have had, or managed to have, a Team...
Gianluca Meardi, Milan, Italy
McClaren has what it deserves. It would have been different If they had wagered by the double world championship, (alonso), and no by a newbie like Hamilton, or at least sought equal to the two drivers.
Peter, london,
If Hamilton's dad didn't accuse to McLaren in Hungry, Alonso and McLarern would be Champion.
Angel Lago Villar, Sevilla, Spain
It' s incredible : McLaren team can't lose.
After the spy story (remeber the result : guilty) , now the appeal for Interlagos GP result.
Maybe, the next year, McLaren can ask to Fia to create a special championship where there will be only a driver :Hamilton.
Probably he will win
stefano, Milan, Italy
Well done, Ron. Congrats. No constructors' championship. No drivers' championship. £50M fined... Good job.
JUAN LUIS, Madrid, Spain
Can someone remember xina? "we weren't racing kimi"
Maybe it was be better doing it.
ruben, Barcelona, Spain
Good job, McLadren!!! Naural born losers!
ElBono, Pompià ,
Hello,I do not understand why McLaren, with so much money & expertise, can make so many mistakes with something as simple as TYRES!!!!!!
For ALL the management I strongly reccommend a long rest in a very quiet & darkened room.
Lewis of course was absolutely brilliant.
Best regards---------------Roger.
Roger Cawthorne, Buckfastleigh, Devon England
My congratulations to McLaren for the superb style and fair play...
Valentino, Padova, Italy
Alonso is a great gentleman but Hamilton is just an apprentice who should learn from the greatests and be more modest. And you, Ron, get lost!!!
Juanita de Castro, El Rellano, Spain
McLaren team can't lose.
stefano, Milan, Italy
Ron make a BIG mistake this year. At last pressure defeat Hamilton´s ambition. This never hava had happened with Alonso. A two times world champion. A real champion. With Alonso McLaren would have won the championship for sure.
MartÃn P.L., La Coruña, Spain
well well.. looks like its time to give Ronnie a long vacation
George of the Jungle, London, UK
Why nobody says that Mclaren was wrong to bet for a rookie? Lewis's car lost power was due to his driving out. Hamilton has lost the champioship yesterday like in Shangai. Lewis is an exceptional driver, but Alonso is a double world champion and this stupid and supposed equality politic has dashed all Mclaren possibilities. Mclaren has done a clamorouse ridiculous.
john, barcelona,
Good job Alonso! all the sensible people knows that if your team manager Mr. Ron Denis was a gentelman and fulfill with your agreemnet, (Alonso was contracted as pilot nº1) Mc Laren could have a winner now, but this world is full of people without honour, PUSHA ALONSO!!
Beltran, Madrid, Spain
Sorry Hamiltons but after all, God is above us. Thanks Alonso for being a good sportman and thank you for being a excellent PERSON. Be strong, ALONSO, all these things will make you stronger
alberto, Sevilla, España
You cannot sell the skin of a bear before to hunt it.
Hey Ron, why did you pay a lot of money to a pilot if you decided to push a novice?
Jose Spain
Jose Vicente, Madrid,
F1 has a deserving champion. Someone who won by driving, trying hard, never loosing hope and keeping his head cool. True Iceman, and there is only one Iceman â Kimi
TS, London,
What does a guy from new york knows about F-1?
Do we need to remember how tow trucks got hamilton back on the road? how he has never been penalize for the same things fernando was? everyone wanted hamilton to win no matter what and they almost got it done.
if ron had given fernando the same oportunities ron and mclarem will have a world champion but they wanted hamilton to be the champ and ended up empty.
I hope one day the usa have a F-1 driver so they stop all the whinning and crying from new york.
driver number 1, brasilia, brasil
To Hamilton, its POPE, Rum, McLaren, Ecclestone, the FIA, the English and German press, and to all those that manipulated, prevaricaron and tried to gain with traps....VIVA ALONSO!
Juan Carlos, Barcelona, España
The McLaren drivers were in contention for the title only because they were the beneficiaries of industrial spying. They should have not even been on the track.
Of the three top drivers, Kimi was the only one who never complained, who never whined, and who never played politics so as to advance his own position. Perhaps together with Felipe Massa, he was the only driver out there truly worthy of the championship.
When things got difficult, instead of whining, Kimi put his head down and tried harder. That is the sign of a true champion. Congratulations Kimi!
Talkative Finn, London, UK
Congratulations Lewis, you got what you deserved
WER, Andorra, Andorra
Didn't anybody think it was rather cynical that Lewis's car lost power for exactly the amount of time necessary to put him out of contention? Almost as though somebody had ensured that no driver from McClaren would win this year.........especially as the car had been so reliable all season....oh and then the fault (through mechanical damage) did not return.......
John, Horsham, UK
Since McClaren were found guilty of an offence so serious that it cost them Pds50 million, it seems inappropriate that their drivers were even in the title race. Surely they must have gained some advantage, however small, from their team's misdemeanors, and should therefore have had points deducted. Fortunately, justice was done at the end of the day, at least for Raikkonen. What about the other drivers though?
Ronald E. Watts, Nicosia, Cyprus
my congratulations to mcLaren. Great Season, indeed :))
Marius, Barcelona, Catalonia
Now that the season is over and Little Fernando is going back to Renault, does this mean we don't have to deal with all the whining and crying from Spain in the space? I really, really hope so. Congratulations to Kimi, well done and with very few words, just a lot of great driving.
J Nystrom, New York, USA
Lewis Hamilton is a great driver, and will be greater without Ron Dennis
Luis GarcÃa, marbella, Spain
Well done Hamilton, you have got that with the best car your team get nothing this year. Mclaren-Mercedes, Ron Dennis, and all UK must be really happy with you.
William, Manchester, UK
You are forgetting to mention that the "technical failure" in Hamilton's car came after he made a mistake and ran wide out of a corner, thus damaging the car. This information was given by a member of the Mc Laren team to a spanish tv during the race. It is obvious that Hamilton couldn't stand the pressure.
I think McLaren have lost a championship that Alonso could have secured a long time ago if the team hadn't made an obvious choice to favour Hamilton, but anyway a Ferrari victory seems fairer for the sport (after the spying scandal).
Peter, Birmingham, UK
Hamilton is a little bit irresponsible young driver.
All the blame to Ron Dennis not to belive in his NUMBER ONE, ALONSO.
This is the obvious result.
Francisco Ocaña, Ciudad Real, Spain
In life, seniorty means something. Hamilton is one of the best drivers ever to arrive in F-1. But McClaren made a huge mistake not betting on the experiences Cham. If Alonso would have been supported as the number º driver of the team, you would no t be lamenting haveing lost the championship to Ferrari. Ron Dennis should really rethink his tactics. Too bad.
Javier , Pamplona, Spain
