The man, the films, those blondes. Free DVD collection starting this Sunday

My wife and I have a week in Samoa on the way to visiting my brother in New Zealand. We'd like to tour the island by car, but have heard that locals throw stones at passing cars there? Is this true, and if so, how should we get around? Jack Humphries, Bath
Sunday Times travel expert Richard Green responds: It's true that a few years back, in some outlying villages, unaccustomed to seeing cars drive through, youngsters did take to throwing stones at passing cars. It was usually on a Sunday, when the guys play rugby and the ladies kirikiti (local cricket), both on pitches close to or straddling the road, and when someone was driving way too fast.
Samoa remains one of the most traditional societies in the Pacific, and the Fa'sasamoa (Samoan Way) is a strong system of rules and behavior codes. Take your time, relax, and all will be well.
I've driven around the main island several times, and if you keep your speed down and, you won't have a problem. Be especially mindful of the narrow verges and small villages children, dogs, chickens, and pigs all wander about freely.
Try Avis or local company, Funway Rental, which both have offices in Apia, and charge from £30 per day. Fill up in Apia too, as petrol stations are scarce elsewhere on the island, and note that the speed limit is 25mph around Apia or 35mph on the open road.
That said - a hire car does distance you from the locals, who are the highlight of any trip to Samoa, and unless you really need to, I'd say don't bother with a car of your own. A taxi is cheap for short trips, and even for a full day shouldn't cost more than £30.
And whatever you do, try the local busses at least once, which are terrific fun. They are brightly painted, eccentrically driven, and cheap (usually about 50p). The last one I went on, all orange and yellow, with no windows and crammed with friendly Samoans, sported a typically bizarre banner "Running on girlfriend power".

Have no fear. Just try and not act like a tourist. Be respectful and dont throw your money around. Samoans are proud , honest , and respectful , and so should you.

Be respectful of people, don't speed and don't be loud. I've driven rental cars many times in Samoa and never had a problem. I suggest you rent a car from Violine at Budget Rental cars -she is very friendly and helpful. Enjoy your visit!
